Block or auto-block a patron

When the F grade auto-blocks and how to override manually.

Block a patron from new holds and checkouts.

Auto-block

When a patron's grade drops to F, they're auto-blocked. See "Patron scoring".

Manual block

  • Patrons → find them → Block account
  • Pick a reason (optional, internal only)
  • Save

What blocking does

  • New holds: blocked
  • New checkouts: blocked
  • Renewals: still allowed (so they can finish returning what they have)
  • Browsing/portal access: still allowed

Unblocking

  • Patrons → find them → Unblock account
  • Or: clear automatically when they return outstanding books (if Auto-clear is on)

Auto-clear

Settings → Patrons → toggle "Auto-clear F-grade when all books returned". On by default.

Internal notes

When blocking, add a note (e.g., "Lost 3 books, needs to pay replacement"). The note is internal — patrons don't see it.

Notification

By default, blocked patrons see a message in the portal: "Your account is on hold. Please speak with a librarian." Customize in Settings → Email Templates → Account Blocked.
