Hold expirations
How long "ready" lasts and what happens when a patron doesn't pick up.
A "Ready" hold expires after a certain number of days if the patron doesn't pick up.
Default
7 days from the day the hold becomes Ready.
How it works
- When a copy becomes available, the system picks the first patron in the waitlist
- Their hold is marked "Ready" and they're emailed
- A 7-day countdown starts
- If they pick up the book in 7 days, the hold is fulfilled (becomes a loan)
- If they don't, the hold expires and moves to the next person
Email reminders
- Email 1: When the hold becomes Ready
- Email 2: Reminder 2 days before expiration (configurable)
- Email 3: Notification that the hold expired (sent after expiration)
Configuring
Settings → Loan Policies → Hold expiration → enter days (default 7)
Patron picked up after expiration
If a patron arrives to pick up a book that has expired:
- The book may have been claimed by the next patron in line
- Or it may still be on the hold shelf — check the shelf
- If available, you can re-place the hold and check it out fresh
Stopping the countdown
The countdown stops the moment the book is checked out at the desk. Staff can manually fulfill a hold before the patron arrives (advance pickup) by marking the loan in Checkout.
