Check out a book to a patron at the staff desk.

Where

Front office → Check out (or click the book scanner icon)

Step-by-step

  • Scan the patron's library card OR look them up by name, email, or card number
  • Patron details appear — confirm it's the right person
  • Scan the book barcode OR look it up by title
  • Confirm the loan period (default 21 days, override if needed)
  • Click "Check out"
  • Receipt prints (if configured)

Multiple books at once

Add as many books as the patron is borrowing — scan each one in turn. All get checked out in one transaction.

Override loan period

Some books have a custom period (e.g., reference books, 7 days). The default appears; click "Custom" to change it for this loan only.

Patron is on hold (waitlist)

If the patron is the next in line on a waitlist, the system will:

  • Mark their hold as fulfilled
  • Check the book out to them
  • Notify the next person in line if there are more holds

Patron is blocked

If the patron has an F grade, the checkout is blocked. You can override with a one-time exception or unblock the patron first (see "Block or auto-block a patron").

Confirmation

The checkout shows:

  • New loans count
  • Due dates
  • Print receipt button

What the patron sees

  • Email confirmation of the loans
  • Loans appear in their portal immediately
