Running a self-checkout kiosk smoothly

Tablet setup, the lock-screen, and supervision tips.

Tips for a smooth self-checkout kiosk.

Hardware

  • iPad or large Android tablet
  • Wall mount or stand at counter height
  • Optional barcode scanner

Set up the home screen

  • yourlibrary.tryshelfwise.com/self-checkout
  • Add to home screen
  • Hide the address bar (iOS: Settings → Safari → Show Tab Bar → off)
  • Lock to one app (Guided Access on iOS)

Identification options

  • Library card scan (fastest)
  • Name lookup (works if cards are lost)
  • Email lookup (slower; only for tech-comfortable patrons)

Reduce friction

  • Pre-print patron cards with barcodes
  • Keep a tablet stylus chained to the kiosk
  • Provide a small return basket beside the kiosk

Signage

  • "Self-checkout — scan your card to get started"
  • Clear instructions for what to do if it doesn't work
  • A "Need help? Ring the bell" sign

Monitor occasionally

  • Walk past the kiosk to make sure it's responsive
  • Check for stuck transactions weekly
  • Restart the tablet weekly (resets background apps)

Train your staff

  • Show them how to override (admin sign-in)
  • Show them how to clear a stuck session

Patron training

  • 1-on-1 walkthrough for the first 5 patrons who use it
  • They'll teach others
